Remember those songs of our youth that made us both smile warmly and yet made us sad at the same time? Here’s one of the best of them. Though it did not become a hit, it is a great song.

Message to retailers: What part of "Black Friday" do you not understand? It's Friday -- one day -- not an entire month!

Message to the rest of us: If you want to stop that stuff, do not participate. Do not join the mob of "Black Friday month" robotic, mind-numbed, blindly obedient consumers. Do not buy Christmas-related stuff from stores that refuse to acknowledge "Christmas." Do not buy from retailers that insult your sensibilities. When their money on the line, believe me, they'll listen.

The Lost Art of Conversation

There was a lot of conversation when we were kids. Johnny Carson was a terrific performer; but he could also engage in great conversations. The day that President Kennedy was assassinated, Johnny Carson had to put on a show. The network decided not to broadcast a re-run. And they had advertising and other obligations; so they couldn’t just go off the air. But Carson was not about come out on stage and do an Aunt Blabby routine six hours after the president had been gunned down. So he gathered a few friends and others who had known the president, and they had a 90-minute conversation in front of the audience and television cameras. It was not maudlin or overly dramatic. It was simply a heart-warming conversation; and it was television at its best. Carson could do that with many guests.

But you’ll never see current talk-show hosts actually engage in a conversation. They may be fine entertainers, but they have no skills at conducting a real conversation on stage.

Good conversation does not come naturally; it is an acquired art. It took me a while to realize it, but that is what is missing in the late night shows... and, not surprisingly, in life. Back in the sixties, we had lots of conversationalists. Remember David Suskind? Jack Paar? Steve Allen could carry on a terrific conversation when he was not trying to be funny; he was brilliant. But they are all off the scope now. Barbara Walter’s pre-academy award interviews were awful. Tom Snyder was the last of the great television conversationalists. When he left, the lights went out.

I Remember... November 16

November 16 has been a busy day. In 1959, "The Sound of Music" premiered on Broadway. Not at all related, but one year later, Clark Gable died... lone before his time. He was 59. November 16.

Same day in 1968, Agents 99 and 86 got married. Five years later, President Nixon approved construction of the Alaska pipeline.

Dr. Clark is (or was) a professor in which department at the University of Missouri?
    Communications
    Biology
    Philosophy
    Greek Studies

2. As we noted above, on November 16, 1968, Agents 99 and 86 tied the knot. We know them from what TV show?

3. Come and listen to a story 'bout a man named Jed...
Aw, you all know the first verse. So...

Well, the first thing you knowed,
ol' Jed's a millionaire;
the kin-folk said, "Jed, move away from there."
They said California is the place you ought to be.
So they loaded up the truck and moved to Beverly;
Hills that is... swimming pools...
