“What a Wonderful World.” There are so many marvelous versions of this song. You can’t hear it often enough. Today we offer a sweet version by Rod McKuen.

This Week with the Chicowitz

He Sleeps with the Fishes

One day I caught a small fish, put it in my pail and took it home.

(Ya’ gotta look hard, but it is there.) I donno... I was going to keep it as a pet or something. But the next day when I went outside and looked at the pail, the fish was dead. My mother explained that the fish was a saltwater fish and I had put it in a pail of fresh water. So... a few days later when I caught another one, I put it in the pail and dumped some table salt into the water. Yep... you guessed it... same result. This was not encouraging.

The next time I caught a fish our neighbor showed me how to clean, cut, cook, and eat the fish. He thought it was terrific. This was the first fish I had ever cleaned, cut, cooked, or eaten. But still, something just did not seem right about the whole thing.

Now... my father was a surgeon; he was accustomed to cutting things open. I had even watched him perform minor surgery a few times. But trust me, he did not EAT what he cut open. He cut for medicinal purposes only. This just did not seem right. Besides, the fish tasted a bit like... chicken... only wetter.

Now, you may think this is a coincidence, but the next day the beach was hit by a wave of Portuguese Man-of-War fish. These are nasty buggers that sting you like a jellyfish... only more often, though not as deadly. These things did a nasty job on your legs, ankles or whatever part of your body was in the water. The beach was closed for several days while this school of Dennis the Menace marine life juvenile delinquents swam up and down the beach like a bunch of hotrodders cruising the strip.

I Remember... August 3, 1981

Oh yes; I remember August 3, 1981. I was still in mourning. Nobody around me understood what had happened. But I did; and I was in mourning.

You see, two days earlier, August 1, MTV was born. Music videos, 24/7.

Music... videos... an oxymoron if there ever were one.

Before MTV, musicians wrote and performed music to be heard. After MTV, they did it to be watched.

And music has never been the same.

Or as good.

MTV killed rock and roll.

And on August 3, 1981, I was in mourning, because I knew what had just happened.

And I mourned.

The BBHQ Trivia Teaser

Here are three questions from the BBHQ cloud:

1. First, our current events question:
The federal deficit is shrinking... so says President Obama. As of today, he is right. So the Congressional Budget Office has projected that the U.S. will have a balanced budget by what year?
    2018
    2022
    2025
    2035
    never

2. People laughed, but they were supposed to. Ronald Reagan shared billing with a chimpanzee in a movie called "Bedtime for ."

3. Lyrics from a great boomer-era song:

I needed the shelter of someone's arms
and there you were.
I needed someone to understand my ups and downs
and there you were.
With sweet love and devotion
deeply touching my emotion.
I want to stop -- and thank you baby
What is the title of the song?

There are no prizes here... it's just for fun.

The BBHQ Joke of the Week

We cannot recall any time we have laughed at an accident involving the wounding of someone by gunfire.

Well, there's always a first. But this is funny. And true.

A lonely East Texas Hwy; 3 am; a man with a gun; and an armadillo.

What could go wrong?

A motorist told deputies he was shooting at the armored little mammal in the wee hours Thursday morning. A bullet ricocheted off the creature striking him in the head.

The unidentified marksman was treated at a local hospital for a minor wound. No word on the fate of the armadillo or the type of gun used.

But wait; there's more:

A Georgia man wounded his 74-year-old mother-in-law after the 9 mm bullet from the gun he shot careened off an armadillo, hit a fence, went through the back door of mom's mobile home, penetrated the recliner she was sitting in, and struck her in the back.

Mom is fine; she suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The little, 4-legged varmint went to armadillo heaven (presumably). No word if the man is headed to divorce court.

Have a great week. We'll share the fun again next Monday.
