This Week with the Chicowitz

Our House is a Very, Very Fine House -- Not!

My sister and I grew up in a three-story house in Shaker Heights, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland. (That's us on the front steps.) The house was over 30 years old when we moved there. But it weathered the raising of two rambunctious kids and a dog, 19-below zero temperatures in the midwest snowbelt, and anything else we could throw at it – and throw we did.

When I was about twelve, a huge sewer pipe broke up around Warrensville Center Road, and the basement of every house within a quarter mile was flooded. We had nearly eight feet of water in our basement. The basement... you know... where the heater, the washer, the dryer, and the tools and the workshop are; that’s where we kept all the big, important, expensive stuff. (Yep; that’s the laundry room in our basement over there on the right.) So what happened? I donno, exactly... the water went away, we did a load of laundry, and that was that.

Eye Remember... July 11:

I remember July 11, 1956:

President Eisenhower signs the law mandating "in God we trust" be printed on all U.S. paper currency.

I remember July 11, 1985: Coca-Cola introduces the New Coke.

As Julia Roberts said in "Pretty Woman,"
"Big mistake!"

A little social studies/civics question this time.
FBI Director Jim Comey made news this past week. The FBI director reports directly to what individual (the position, not the person's name)?

Hint: Note today's date.

3. From a 1970, #1 song, complete the last line:

Hey girl what ya doin' down there?
Dancin' alone every night while I live right above you.
I can hear your music playin';
I can feel your body swayin';

I love you.

The BBHQ Joke of the Week
As a potential juror in an assault-and-battery case, I was sitting in a courtroom, answering questions from both sides. The prosecutor asked such questions as: Had I ever been mugged? Did I know the victim or the defendant?

The defense attorney took a different approach, however. "I see you are a teacher," he said. "What do you teach?"

"English and theater," I responded.

"Then I guess I better watch my grammar," the defense attorney quipped.

"No" I shot back. "You better watch your acting."

When the laughter in the courtroom died down, I was excused from the case.

Have a great week. We'll share the fun again next Monday.
