June 1, 2015

A BBHQ Insta-Quote:

We in this country, in this generation, are, by destiny rather than choice, the watchmen on the walls of world freedom. We ask, therefore, that we may be worthy of our power and responsibility, that we may exercise our strength with wisdom and restraint, and that we may achieve in our time and for all time the ancient vision of ‘peace on earth, goodwill toward men.’
   ~ John F. Kennedy

BBHQ Monday Morning Upper.

In 1963, Jerry Lewis turned an empty office and a simple tune into a wonderfully creative comedy routine featured in “Who’s Minding the Store.” Nearly a half-century later, we were able to see him perform that routine on stage.

In today's BBHQ Upper, we share both with you.

It happens every spring, June... to be specific:

It's become another tradition, in recognition of President Obama's initiative on Global Warming Climate Change:

... as we have done so many times before.

June 13, 2005:
Indeed it is that time of year again; hurricane season. Already, we have been scared out of bahungas as yet another female ripped up the Florida coast over the weekend. Oh the humanity!

June 5, 2006:
But first let's stipulate this: it's June - hurricane season. Now, we're in Florida. So, of course, we're all gonna die. We're all gonna die!! So the media has told us. So that is destined. Let's just accept it, noting that we can do nothing about it. We're all gonna die.

June 12, 2006:
Well wouldn't you know it. No sooner last week did we say that it's June - hurricane season; so of course, we're gonna die. We're all gonna die! So here comes the first tropical storm of the season. And, as we write this, it's heading directly for us!

June 4, 2007:
Okay, it's early June, and you know what that means. Now altogether, IT'S A HURRICANE IT'S A HURRICANE WERE ALL GOING TO DIE WERE ALL GONNA DIE.

June 16, 2008:
IT'S A HURRICANE IT'S A HURRICANE WERE ALL GOING TO DIE WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE.

June 4, 2012:
It's a hurricane; it's a hurricane! Where all gonna die! And I know we said that last year and the year before and the year before and the year before that. But this time, this time, we really mean it.
Global warming, climate change, and all that.
IT'S A HURRICANE; IT'S A HURRICANE; WERE ALL GONNA DIE!

June 3, 2013:
Summertime and you know what that means! It's hurricane season. We're all gonna die! Where all gonna die!

I know, I know; we said that last year; but this time we really mean it and we said that last year, too. But this time we really, really do mean it. WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE; WERE ALL GONNA DIE!

OK, OK... I know it has been over 3,500 days since a cat 3 (or higher) hurricane hit the US. (The largest cone of silence ever recorded.) All the more reason why....

But you heard what President Obama said!

(Never mind that they said the same thing after Hurricane Katrina. That was then!)

Do we need to say it again?

"IT'S A HURRICANE; IT'S A HURRICANE. WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE; WE'RE ALL GONNA; DIE!!"

(Apparently, yes we do.)

Commencement Speeches

In this essay I offer commencement speeches of three provocative thinkers.

Kurt Vonnegut (allegedly): “Wear sunscreen. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience.”

Dennis Prager: “The greatest struggle in your life is not with society; it is with yourself.”

Bill Whittle: “Your insistence on being weak and isolated and protected and safe is a guarantee that what we are going to being needing large numbers of in the near future are not graphic designers or game coders or app developers or medieval poetry majors; were gonna’ need warriors.”

I Remember... June 1, 1967

The Beatles released "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" on June 1, 1967. That no such band existed mattered not one bit. Release of the Fab Four's 8th album followed a grueling, mediocre performance tour. It was the Beatles' last tour. Fortunately for the boys, the album was both a commercial and critical success.

The album cover featured the likeness of more than 60 celebrities and noted personalities (noted by the Beatles, that is.) One celebrity is pictured 3 times. We could ask you who it is. But...

Songs on the album include the following:

"Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"
"With a Little Help from My Friends"
"Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds"
"Getting Better"
"Fixing a Hole"
"She's Leaving Home"
"Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!"
"Within You Without You"
"When I'm Sixty-Four"
"Lovely Rita"
"Good Morning Good Morning"
"Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)"
"A Day in the Life"

The BBHQ Trivia Teaser

Here are three questions from the BBHQ cloud:

1. First, our current events question:
Finally... finally, the U.S. Commerce Department released the economic growth report for the first quarter of 2015. For comparison purposes, the annual growth rate for the last 6 years was 1.7%. For the first 14 years of the century it was 1.8%. In the 90s, it was 3.4%. In the 80s, it was 3.3%. What was the reported annual GDP growth rate for the first quarter of 2015:
    -0.7%
    1%
    1.7%
    2.5%
    3.8%

2. Who is the.... character on the right?

3. Last week we asked you who voiced the part of the car in "My Mother the Car." Only a few of you knew that it was Ann Sothern. In our question, we also mentioned another car that talked, Kitt, in "Knight Rider." Again, without looking it up, who supplied the voice of Kitt?

There are no prizes here... it's just for fun.

The BBHQ Joke of the Week

Some asked us a somewhat disturbing question last week. Visitor Liz asked, "How many u.s. baby boomers die each day?"

But Madam Red Dot, who handles some of the mail, did not miss a beat in her response.

Whew… We check the obituaries in the paper first thing each morning. If our name is not there, we get dressed and order breakfast.

We do not know if any organization keeps track of that stat. But given that the current longevity rate is about 77 years, and the oldest boomers are a mere 69, We suspect that very few take the proverbial dirt nap each day.

A couple years ago, a headline in the Washington Post read, “Baby boomers are killing themselves at an alarming rate.” We suspect that that was mostly wishful thinking.

This year the CDC reported that, “Many Aging Boomers Face Chronic Illness, But Death Rate Is Falling.”

So… whoya’ gonna’ believe?

We believe the daily obits in the newspaper.

Have a great week. We'll share the fun again next Monday.
