The Upper and the Real Deal

The BBHQ Monday Morning Upper

BBHQ Monday Morning Upper.

Today's upper is a very clever video juxtaposition — a few classic dance segments from movies in the 30s, 40s, and 50s paired with a great 70s dance song.

Technology Good; Technology Bad

This week Hershel continues his discussion on "technology good - technology bad":

Cordless telephone: very good idea; I like to be able to walk and talk.

Cell phones: very bad idea. I do not like to walk that far... or talk that much. I know that there are times when a cell phone is very handy. But on the whole, it is a bad, bad idea. Absolutely nobody is that important. Trust me; much as you think you canít live without yours, time will prove me right on this one. The next time youíre caught with your pants down around your ankles in a stall in a public bathroom trying to carry on a serious conversation, youíll begin to agree with me. Text messaging: Please! Absolutely ridiculous.

Smart phone: A real Pandora's Box. Probably a good idea; definitely badly used and abused. You should have to have a special operator’s license to use one of those things:

E-reader: Fabulous idea! It will change the way you read... mostly for the better. It will change how much you read. It will change your life.

Picture phone: bad, bad idea. AT&T pushed this for the better part of a decade. The absolute best thing about the telephone is that you can talk to someone at home without having to reveal that you are not wearing socks... or underwear.

DNA testing: I was up in the air on this one, until the famous Blue Dress turned up. DNA testing: good idea!

Traffic cameras to track bad guys: good idea.

Red light cameras: Allegedly they are supposed to encourage drivers not to run red lights. In reality, their purpose is to suck money from citizens and shovel into the grubby hands of the government. Red light cameras: despicable idea!

Police radar: bad idea.

Radar detector: good idea.

Automobile cruise control: heaven on earth!

Just for Men hair coloring: good idea.

Spray-on hair for men: bad idea.

I Remember... May 11, 1977

I was in our nation's capitol on May 11, 1977. The local news outlets reported that President Carter had a typically busy day, meeting with congressional and cabinet leaders, conducting phone meetings. He took time for a game of tennis with Bert Lance, and attended an opera performance.

Just another day in the life of a busy executive.

And that's the way it was... May 11, 1977.

The BBHQ Trivia Teaser

Here are three questions from the BBHQ cloud:

1. First, our current events question:
Last week NBC's Cynthia McFadden asked former President Bill Clinton if he would continue giving speeches that pay him hundreds of thousands of dollars each. Mr. Clinton replied:
    No.
Not after she is elected president.
Yes; but I will not accept payment for them.
Yes; but all the money will go directly to the federal treasury.
Oh yeah; I gotta pay our bills.
What? Do I look like a complete idiot?
    Where's Monica?

2. OK; it may not have been a busy day on May 11, 1977. But it sure was in 1944. It was V-E day. Most kids today have no idea what "V-E" stands for. But I'll bet you do.

3. The BBHQ Monday Morning Upper next week will feature Alvin and the Chipmunks... you know, Dave Seville, Alvin, Theodore, and.... and... what was that other little chipper, chipmonkey's name?

There are no prizes here... it's just for fun.

The BBHQ Joke of the Week

We call this one "leftovers":

Morris Schwartz is on his deathbed; with his faithful nurse, his wife, his two sons and his daughter by his side. He knows the end is near so he says to them:

"Bernie, I want you to take the houses in Beverly Hills."

"Sybil, you get the apartments over in Los Angeles Plaza."

"Louie, I want you to take the office buildings in City Center."

"Sarah, my dear wife, please take all the residential buildings downtown."

The nurse is just blown away by all this, and as Morris slips away, she says, "Mrs. Schwartz, your husband must have been such a hard working man to have accumulated all this property."

Sarah replies, "Property? The schmuck had a paper route!"

Have a great week. We'll share the fun again next Monday.
