BBHQ

March 2, 2015

A BBHQ Insta-Quote:

We are products of our past, but we don't have to be prisoners of it.
    ~ Rick Warren

Links here are good only for the week of February 23. After that... is anybody's guess.

The Upper and the Real Deal

The BBHQ Monday Morning Upper

Click the picture for the
BBHQ Monday Morning Upper.

Today's upper sums up the sad history of computer tech support in 1 minute.

Old Business: In last week's Trivia Teaser, most everyone knew that Barney's wife's first name was Betty. But only 30% of our respondents knew that it was MSNBC that was so unserious as to ask Attorney General Eric holder to quack like a duck.

The BBHQ Shorts

Most everyone keeps up with the headlines. But there are what we believe to be important stories just beneath the surface of the headlines. And the mainstream press being what it is, unless you dig a little, you may miss some significant items... facets of events that shape our society.

Well, we do some of the digging for you.

The BBHQ Shorts offers a glimpse of some of these stories beneath the radar of the mainstream press.

It is not trivia; it is not nostalgia; and it is often not pretty. But it is real, and it is important. It is about what is happening today. You should be aware of it.

The BBHQ Shorts is meant to inform, educate, provoke, and inspire. We add new content to the BBHQ Shorts 2-3 times a week.

Or, as Paul Harvey used to put it, "You already know the news. Now you're going to hear... the rest of the story."

A Few of Our Favorite Things

I Remember... March 2, 1954

1965... on this date, "The Sound of Music" comes to the big screen, after a tremendously successful run on Broadway.

Four years later... March 2, 1969, the Concorde took off on its maiden voyage.

Did you hear Lady Gaga's version of "The Sound of Music" on the Oscar show? It was very good; she really can sing extremely well.

The BBHQ Trivia Teaser

Here are three questions from the BBHQ cloud:

1. First our current events question:
A little government-ese here. A survey indicated that very few Americans know what the government-created acronym ACA stands for. Do you?

2. Now, the real stuff: Fred, Wilma, Barney, Betty... OK, what was Barney and Betty's last name?

3. From our Lyrics You Know You Know collection, complete the last line:

  Sail on silvergirl,
Sail on by.
Your time has come, to shine.
All your dreams are
.

There are no prizes here... it's just for fun.

The BBHQ Joke of the Week

Well, this one skirts on the edge of our rule on decency*. But it's funny enough and just this side of the edge that we think it to be worthy. And unlike some of the always totally decent content of our newsletter, this will not be censored by your e-mail software. It's a graphic image. (Your e-mail software can read, but it cannot see.)

* The BBHQ decency rule: If it would have offended or embarrassed my mother, it does not make it to our web site -- or our newsletter.

Brush Up Your Webster - featuring Madam Red Dot

In the future, your smartphone may be smart... very smart. But it will not be primarily a phone. So our search for the replacement name for the "smartphone" continues. Keep at it, please.

Use your e-mail software (that's where you are now), click reply and let us know. Nope; this is not a contest. But imagine how much fame came to the guy who thought of... "Net Neutrality."

This is an exercise in subject/verb agreement. Is it "await" or "awaits"?

The solution lies in identifying the subject of the sentence. Is the subject "sea" or "changes"? "Changes" is the object of the prepositional phrase "of changes." OK... never mind that; too wordy. The subject is the singular word "sea." So the verb must be singular, too: "awaits." The editor (the LA Times, in this case) got it wrong.

So... brush up your Webster!

Have a great week. We'll share the fun again next Monday.
