BBHQ

February 9, 2015

A BBHQ Insta-Quote:

People tell me, "You're such an optimist." Am I an optimist? An optimist says the glass is half-full. A pessimist says the glass is half-empty. A survivalist is practical. He says, "Call it what you want, but just fill the glass." I believe in filling the glass.
    ~ Louis Zamperini

Links here are good only for the week of February 9. After that... is anybody's guess.

The BBHQ Monday Morning Upper

BBHQ Monday Morning Upper.

Following up on our celebration of Super Bowl TV commercials, today we present episodes 3 and 4 of the Budweiser Frogs series.

The BBHQ Contest:

A lot of people took a stab at this one. Not a whole lot got it right. The character is Will Rogers. "All I know is what I read in the newspaper." And the actor... Der Bingle himself: Bing Crosby. Yep.

Stick with us. We'll have another one soon.

I Remember... February 9, 1964

Boy, do I remember February 9, 1964!

Yep; it was a Sunday. And the Beatles were here!

Nielsen reported that 73 million people watch Ed Sullivan's show that night.

76 million boomers -- 73 million viewers... Coincidence? I think not.

(I know what you're all thinking... "Where were the other 3 million?" Well, look at the date: February 9, 1964 -- 11 months before the back-end of the boomer-era boundary: 1946-1964. I suggest that many of those 3 million made their grand entry into this world, feet first, exactly 9 months later, just under the wire. Coincidence? Again, I think not.)

The Calendar is Agin' Us

We love traditions... holidays and special celebrations. Two big ones occur this week: the anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth, February 12; and Valentine's Day, February... well, you all know when that is.

Too early to celebrate now, and too late next Monday. So... on Thursday, we'll post a special salute to our 16th president on our Home Page.

And we're gonna' mess with the calendar, too. Next Monday's newsletter, a special Valentine's Day edition, will arrive in your inbox on Friday, February 13.

Oh yeah; we forgot about that other "special" day. Well, you can read your newsletter; we're sleeping in.

This Week with the Chicowitz

The Plastic Surgery Saga II

Before going under the knife, patients are required to read and sign an informed consent declaration. We have mixed feelings about this. We are all in favor of as much information as possible. But this form is like the little insert in most medicine containers.... if you read it, you will never take the medicine!

Some of the more interesting precautions for bletharoplasty surgery include these:

Bleeding: Post-operative bleeding may require emergency treatment or surgery.

Damage to deeper structures: Deeper structures, such as nerves, blood vessels, and eye muscles may be damaged during the course of surgery.

Blindness: Blindness may be caused by internal bleeding around the eye during or after surgery.

Surgical anesthesia: There is the possibility of complications, injury, AND EVEN DEATH from all forms of surgical anesthesia or sedation.

There are four pages of this scary stuff, folks. Who wrote this thing, Stephen King? Gees, the Declaration of Independence is only two pages long... and it never mentions death!

Brush Up Your Webster - featuring Madam Red Dot

The search for the replacement name for the "smartphone" continues. Our favorite entry last week was LINGO: Limitless INtelligence Gathering Online. Keep at it, please.

Use your e-mail software (that's where you are now), click reply and let us know. Nope; this is not a contest. But imagine how much fame came to the guy who thought of... "Apple."

"Those who can teach, teach. Those who can't teach... administrate":

So... brush up your Webster!
