BBHQ

January 19, 2015

A BBHQ Insta-Quote:

In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.

~ Martin Luther King, Jr.

Links here are good only for the week of January 19. After that... is anybody's guess.

Our annual nostalgic look at Super Bowl.... commercials features an ad you probably neither saw nor remember. But it is a classic. This is what commercials should be.

The BBHQ Contest Returns:

... though not until next week.

Next Monday we'll give you a chance to win a copy of Hershels's e-book, "Midlife Crisis: A Cockeyed, yet Painfully and Descriptively Accurate, while nonetheless Pleasantly Humorous Examination of and Upbeat Treatment for One of Mother Nature's Little Practical Jokes."

Here's a hint: It will involve this:

I remember it well: January 19, 1983 -- the birth of Lisa:

... and with it... the friendly "mouse" and the "gui."

What We'll Learn

There are several versions of "What I've Learned" flying around the Internet. We offer a few examples of them here at BBHQ from time to time.

Today I'd like to offer some examples of what I think we will learn, as we approach maturity and recover from the hangover of our selfish youth:

There is no such thing as quality time; there is only... time.

Raising our kids is the most important thing we will ever do. Every time we delegate some of that responsibility to a day care center, a baby sitter, a relative, a school, a computer, a television, or a government... we lose some ability to shape the content of their character. If we care about our kids, we should fervently guard and retain as much of that responsibility as possible.

Brush Up Your Shakespeare
      — with Madam Red Dot:

The end of the smartphone.

No, I don't mean the end of the smartphone. I mean the end of "smartphone."

Think about it. Your smartphone may be "smart," but do you use it primarily to make phone calls? A lot of people do not. Down the road, the smartphone will perform oodles of functions, making its capability as a telephone a minor thing.

Given that, I think we need a new name for the smartphone. Now, I am not the chief word-maker, but I do claim to be a word-agitator. Let's get started.

No; "very smart phone" won't do. We have to get away from the idea of the smartphone (whatever we're gonna' call it) as a "phone."

It must be short: 1 or 2 words. (Yeah; like "smartphone," we'll probably end up combining 2 words into 1.) It should be 2 or 3 syllables.

Got any ideas? Click reply and let us know. Nope; this is not a contest. But imagine how much fame came to the guy who came up with "gui."

We'll work on it for a few weeks, and post your replies in our newsletter.
