90% of Americans own a television set; ABC begins broadcasting in color.

The first K-Mart and Wal-Mart open.

"A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" with Zero Mostel premieres in New York.

Polaroid introduces color film prints which develop in 60 seconds.

June: President Kennedy federalizes Alabama's National Guard and orders Gov. George C. Wallace to allow two black students to be enrolled at the University of Alabama.

Russia denies placing nuclear missiles in Cuba. But President Kennedy provides proof that they have, places a quarantine around Cuba, and forces their removal.

July: The Telstar I communications satellite is launched.

In a seven-game series, the New York Yankees win the World Series over San Francisco.

Texas computer salesman H. Ross Perot forms a computer company called Electronic Data Systems (E.D.S.)

August: Marilyn Monroe dies of an overdose of sleeping pills. She is forever 36.

The Academy award for Best Picture goes to "Lawrence of Arabia." Gregory Peck wins for Best Actor in "To Kill a Mockingbird."
