The Year was 1973... the Month: September ---
"Let's Get It On!" It was number 1 in September 1973. Marvin Gaye.
The end of the summer of 1973 brought us some of the old and some of the new. Paul Simon, out on his own, had a big hit with "Loves Me Like a Rock." Chicago had a hit with "Getting Stronger Every Day." Diana Ross was in the top 20 with "Touch Me in the Morning." Cher sang "Half Breed." Paul McCartney and Wings performed music for a Bond film; it was "Live and Let Die." And Sly and the Family Stone had their last hit with "If You Want Me to Stay."
What a month of music!
But that was just the warm up act. Grand Funk flew to number 3 with "We're an American Band." The Allman Brothers Band had their first and only only top 20 hit, "Ramblin' Man." Elton John was flying; his hit in September 1973 was "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting." And B. W. Stevenson had his only hit. Do you remember, "My Maria"?
I was no longer a teenager, but I was still in college in September of 1973. There were a lot of changes going on in the country, in my life, and in my music. But it was still rock and roll.... it is still rock and roll... over a quarter of a century later!
Rock on!
What were you doing... in September of 1973?
We have the lyrics to some of these songs, and over 750 others, in the Lyrics section of our Music Room.
Next month, we'll look back at October 1967. Be sure to check out BBHQ in October.
