BBHQ Boomer Essays:

Things to Come, Part II

Our Boomer-In-Charge at BBHQ, Hershel Chicowitz, writes about boomer memories and current events... from a boomer’s perspective. He is sometimes funny, sometimes provocative, some-
times a little of each. We hope you get a kick out of our Boomer Essays.

I remember the “old days” — three years ago — when I could order any current book (and many out-of-print books), and have it in my hands in 2-3 days. Today, I can order a book and have it in my hands in about 90 seconds. It costs a publisher about 10 bucks to put a full-size hardcover book in the hands of retail store. It costs a publisher/retailer about 2 cents to deliver a book to my e-reader. The printed hardback sells at retail for about $20 bucks; the e-book — half that. The cost of the hardcover will surely rise. The cost of an e-book will shrink. Hello!

NON-MEMBER PREVIEW

January, 2012:

I am fascinated about the future... oh, not 50 years from now; 50 years from now, I'll be... looking at life from a different angle. No, I mean six months or six years from now.

Last week, (mouseover here for a preview of the essay) I pointed out the tremendous change that the smart phone will bring... maybe not within the next six months -- but surely within the next six years. Sit tight; I'm just getting started.

Not Your Father's Library

Public libraries have always been the hallmark of a respected community. They are a sign of stability, sophistication, inspiration. They will probably continue to be so... but not in their present form. They have a heap a' downsizing to do.

In 2011, Amazon.com sold more electronic books (e-books) than it did printed books. Hello... the writing is on the wall.

It costs a publisher about 10 bucks to put a fullsize hardcover book in the hands of retail store. I remember the "old days" -- three years ago -- when I was amazed that, using the Internet, I could order any current book (and many out-of-print books), and have it in my hands in 2-3 days.

Today, I can order a book on the Internet and have it in my hands in about 90 seconds.

It costs a publisher (and the retailer; in this case, Amazon.com) about 2 cents to deliver a book to my e-reader (electronic reader: Kindle, Nook, tablet, etc.)

The printed hardback sells at retail for about $20 bucks; the e-book -- half that. The cost of the hardback will surely rise. The cost of an e-book will shrink. Hello! Could it be any clearer?

Amazon's basic e-reader costs less than a hundred bucks. Heck, Amazon should PAY me money to use their Kindle, since I buy so many e-books from them. (Henry Ford once said that he could give away his cars as long as drivers bought replacement parts from him.)

Yeah; that's my hand...
and my book.

The BBHQ Feature Album is "Old Friends Live on Stage (Deluxe Edition) (2 CD/1 DVD)," by Simon & Garfunkel. If you were fortunate enough to see them in concert in 2003, I do not have to sell you. The concert was terrific! This album collection includes 55 songs, plus their new recording, "Citizen of the Planet," and one of the songs sung by the Everly Brothers during the concert. The DVD was recorded during their concert in Madison Square Garden in 2003. For any S&G fan, this is a must have! But then, you knew that already, didn't you? Old Friends Live on Stage (Deluxe Edition) (2 CD/1 DVD)

The BBHQ Feature Book is “Bobby Rydell – Teen Idol on the Rocks.” This is a “behind the scenes” story of one of the boomers’ first rock n’ roll stars. Told in the first person, Bobby chronicles his short ride to the pinnacle of fame and fortune, his glide through the 70s and 80s, and how he nearly lost it all. Relax; it has a happy ending. Bobby was (and is) a “normal” Philly guy... with an absolute love of music and an amazing gift. For any fan of early rock n’ roll, it’s a wonderful story. And yes, Bobby Rydell is still on tour, playing to boomer fans all over the world. Click here for a closer look at the book.
