BBHQ Boomer Essays:

Health Care – In Their Own Words

Our Boomer-In-Charge at BBHQ, Hershel Chicowitz, writes about boomer memories and current events... from a boomer’s perspective. He is sometimes funny, sometimes provocative, some-
times a little of each. We hope you get a kick out of our Boomer Essays.

OK, I’ll let the politicians themselves do all the talking... in their own words. Watch; listen; and think about it. Are they truthful? Are they reliable? Are they trustworthy? Are these the people you want running the show?

This essay is available in its entirety to all visitors. Enjoy!

March, 2010:

I have written 18 essays on health care -- about 20,000 words. There is a list, and a link to each one near the bottom of this page. I have used facts logic, and reasoning to point out that ObamaCare -- essentially, social medicine -- represents a terrible step backward for our country. Those of you who believe in the value of facts, logic, and reasoning must have found merit in my argument. Many of you who use feelings as a basis for your political and social views were not impressed. Many of you have written to me expressing your displeasure. As I have pointed out, most of the time, your arguments have gone something like this: "Bush lied! Halliburton, Halliburton, Halliburton. Cheney is evil! You lie! You're a fool! Racist!! At least Obama has good intentions. You're just making it up."

And those are the civil responses.

OK; I get it. My words will not enlighten you. Fine.

So, to buttress my argument, I have collected audio/video clips of our leaders -- the ones making the rules. You can disbelieve me; but you cannot deny the words of the people making the rules. You can admit to yourself that their words make you feel bad; you can ignore them; but you cannot deny them.

Perhaps, just perhaps.... if you watch, listen and think... perhaps the impact of the words and the intent of these people will sink in. You will realize what they are doing to our country. And just maybe, you will allow yourself to re-evaluate your feelings. At the very least, you will be better-informed.

In Their Own Words:

The Promise:

"If you like your plan, and you like your doctor... you keep your plan; you keep your doctor."

I refute this in Health Care - Lies and Distortion

"If you have insurance that you like, then you will be able to keep that insurance. If you've got a doctor that you like, you will be able to keep your doctor."

I refute this in Health Care - Lies and Distortion

"The only thing that will change for you under this plan is the amount of money you will spend on premiums. That will be [up to $2,500 per year] less than you are spending now."

President Obama abandoned this foolish and misleading promise the day after he was elected.

"Any plan I sign must include an insurance exchange, including a public option, to increase competition and keep insurance companies honest."

The incusion of any exchange or public option was dropped from the debate. It may be buried in the legislation; but no one is talking about it.

Guaranteed! Not once; but 19 times. ObamaCare will lower your premiums by $2,500, per family, per year. It's money in the bank! Count on it!

"We're gonna' have to have a 60% majority to get a bill to my desk."

Several times, Barack Obama claimed that he must have a "sizeable majority" to pass health care legislation. But in reality, he would take whatever way he could get.

The Real Plan:

2003: "I happen to be a proponent of a single-payer health care plan."

President Obama has avoided admitting that he is still a proponent. One of the promises of the new legislation is increased competition. That is the complete opposite of a single-payer system.

"But I don't think we're gonna' be able to eliminate employer coverage immediately. There's gonna' be potentially some transition process. I can envision a decade out or 15 years out or 20 years out."

That is completely consistent with the health care legislation that passed in 2010. That was the plan, all along.

Congressman Barney Frank on a single-payer system:
"I think if we get a good public option, it could lead to single-payer. And that's the best way to reach single-payer."

At least Barney Frank is honest about it.

"You know we're gonna' control the insurance companies."

A slip of the tongue reveals what the administration has in mind.

View of Other Congressmen:

Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky:
A guy argued "against the public health insurance option, saying it wouldn't let private insurance compete... that a public option will put the private insurance industry out of business and lead to single-payer... He was right. The man was right."

Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky was caught revealing the plan. This, too, is consistent with their actions, though not their words.

Democratic Congressman Alcee Hastings:
"When the deal goes down, all this talk about rules, we make 'em up as we go along."
Another rare moment of candor.

Democratic Congressman John Dingle, from Michigan:
"... to control the people."

It's the Chicago way.

The congressman later claimed that he was tired when he said that. He let his guard down, and told the truth.

The Last Word

Though Congress and the president have tried to hide it, and the press has been largely complicit, if you watched closely, you could tell what they have had in mind. So what what happens next should come as no surprise.

Your insurance premiums will not decrease; competition in the health insurance industry will not increase; access to health care (for those who have insurance) will not improve; you may lose your doctor and/or your health care plan; this will cause the federal deficit to increase substantially; there will be fewer doctors, longer waiting periods, and poorer care.

That is what their own words have revealed.

The BBHQ Feature Album is "Old Friends Live on Stage (Deluxe Edition) (2 CD/1 DVD)," by Simon & Garfunkel. If you were fortunate enough to see them in concert in 2003, I do not have to sell you. The concert was terrific! This album collection includes 55 songs, plus their new recording, "Citizen of the Planet," and one of the songs sung by the Everly Brothers during the concert. The DVD was recorded during their concert in Madison Square Garden in 2003. For any S&G fan, this is a must have! But then, you knew that already, didn't you? Old Friends Live on Stage (Deluxe Edition) (2 CD/1 DVD)

The BBHQ Feature Book is “Bobby Rydell – Teen Idol on the Rocks.” This is a “behind the scenes” story of one of the boomers’ first rock n’ roll stars. Told in the first person, Bobby chronicles his short ride to the pinnacle of fame and fortune, his glide through the 70s and 80s, and how he nearly lost it all. Relax; it has a happy ending. Bobby was (and is) a “normal” Philly guy... with an absolute love of music and an amazing gift. For any fan of early rock n’ roll, it’s a wonderful story. And yes, Bobby Rydell is still on tour, playing to boomer fans all over the world. Click here for a closer look at the book.
