BBHQ Boomer Essays:

Rock On, Rod Stewart!

Our Boomer-In-Charge at BBHQ, Hershel Chicowitz, writes about boomer memories and current events... from a boomer’s perspective. He is sometimes funny, sometimes provocative, some-
times a little of each. We hope you get a kick out of our Boomer Essays.

What is especially remarkable is that, even at age 70, he was bouncing around the stage, singing, dancing, and having a ball like a guy half his age! Early in the show, he shed his jacket and tie. Before he was done, he had gone through three costumes. His mood was infectious. Everyone had a great time. He put on a heck of a show.

NON-MEMBER PREVIEW

Recently I wrote an essay called Rock On! It’s about Jimmy Buffett and Neil Diamond, two of our aging, but ageless rock stars who are still out there performing, at the top of their game. What a treasure!

Surely Brit Rod Stewart belongs in that category.

Unlike many other of our boomer-era rockers, Rod Stewart released single that is a great hit. It’s called “Love Is.” You can watch and listen to it here. It’s OK; sing along:

It’s a great song and video for three seasons. The music is catchy; you’ll want to tap your foot and join in. The lyrics are uplifting; they grab your heart and move you. Finally, 70 year-old Rod Stewart is outside, on the top floor of a building in Los Angeles, singing his heart out, and he is having a blast! You can see it; you can feel it. And it is contagious. You cannot help but smile.

Remember? Those are the things that made our music so wonderful... and endlessly memorable. We are so very fortunate!

On the Road Again

Rod went on the road to promote a new album. He had given two concerts in Canada. Then, his first stop in the U.S. was at a beautiful outdoor venue in Atlanta. We had the good fortune of being there, though our “seats” were way back on the lawn.

(It was a beautiful, warm summer night. And yes; there was some “down time.”)

Track List:

Love Is — Rod Stewart
Please — Rod Stewart
Walking In The Sunshine — Rod Stewart
Love And Be Loved — Rod Stewart
We Can Win — Rod Stewart
Another Country — Rod Stewart
Way Back Home — Rod Stewart
Can We Stay Home Tonight? — Rod Stewart
Batman Superman Spiderman — Rod Stewart
The Drinking Song — Rod Stewart
Hold The Line — Rod Stewart
A Friend For Life — Rod Stewart
Every Rock 'N' Roll Song To Me — Rod Stewart
One Night With You — Rod Stewart
In A Broken Dream [feat. Rod Stewart] — Python Lee Jackson

Unlike Jimmy Buffett’s and Neil Diamond’s shows, Rod Stewart’s show was much... looser. Though I am certain that there was a set list of songs to perform, and many of the songs were carefully choreographed, Rod frequently deviated from the “script” — what little script there was — and played it by ear. He threw balloons and kicked soccer balls into the excited audience. Often the audience sang along.

This video comes directly from his show in Atlanta. The video quality is pretty punk. But it’ll give you a feel for the flavor of the concert. It was loose, happy, lively, and fun.

The clip is 3 minutes long.

Rod Stewart has a long string of great hits. He sang them all: Maggie May, Reason to Believe, You Wear it Well, This Old Heart of Mine, Tonight’s the Night, You’re in my Heart, Forever Young, Have I Told You Lately. Yes, and even Do Ya’ Think I’m Sexy.

But by the time the show ended, you could tell he was exhausted! (Actually, you could tell long before it ended.)

The BBHQ Feature Album is "Old Friends Live on Stage (Deluxe Edition) (2 CD/1 DVD)," by Simon & Garfunkel. If you were fortunate enough to see them in concert in 2003, I do not have to sell you. The concert was terrific! This album collection includes 55 songs, plus their new recording, "Citizen of the Planet," and one of the songs sung by the Everly Brothers during the concert. The DVD was recorded during their concert in Madison Square Garden in 2003. For any S&G fan, this is a must have! But then, you knew that already, didn't you? Old Friends Live on Stage (Deluxe Edition) (2 CD/1 DVD)

The BBHQ Feature Book is “Bobby Rydell – Teen Idol on the Rocks.” This is a “behind the scenes” story of one of the boomers’ first rock n’ roll stars. Told in the first person, Bobby chronicles his short ride to the pinnacle of fame and fortune, his glide through the 70s and 80s, and how he nearly lost it all. Relax; it has a happy ending. Bobby was (and is) a “normal” Philly guy... with an absolute love of music and an amazing gift. For any fan of early rock n’ roll, it’s a wonderful story. And yes, Bobby Rydell is still on tour, playing to boomer fans all over the world. Click here for a closer look at the book.
