BBHQ Boomer Essays:

We’re on a Mission of Love

Our Boomer-In-Charge at BBHQ, Hershel Chicowitz, writes about boomer memories and current events... from a boomer’s perspective. He is sometimes funny, sometimes provocative, some-
times a little of each. We hope you get a kick out of our Boomer Essays.

This week I’d like to share some of the lyrics from a couple dozen love songs of the boomer era. Together, they give you a “feel” for our music. Either as a reminder or as a new experience, the conclusion you’ll reach is inescapable. We enjoyed the best romantic, love songs of any time in history.

This essay is available in its entirety to all visitors. Enjoy!

Say what you will about the boomer generation, but there is no doubt that our music rates on top in the topic of love. I counted over 175 songs from the boomer-era with “love” in the title. There are hundreds of songs... in fact most of them deal with romance, love, and lasting relationships.

(Never mind, for the moment, that we have not exactly been the leaders in “lasting relationships.” I think that’s beside the point here.)

Some boomers grabbed ahold of the “love theme” and centered their life on it. As we came of age, we created “the summer of love.” Some of us built our entire philosphy of life on peace and love. That may be carrying it a bit too far. But to some extent, the music of our lives helped shape our lives.

Which singer or group had the most hits using love as the primary theme? I’m sorry; the battery on my calculator died. The Beatles, Stones, Kiss, Iron Butterfly? Nah, I don’t think so. In the absence of a calculator, I’d put the Carpenters near the top. Elton John is right up there, too. I guess that Frank Sinatra had more romantic hit songs, but we cannot claim him as ours.

My personal favorite, however, is Neil Diamond. I read somewhere that Neil has written over a thousand songs. Only a few dozen of them have “hit the charts.” (“Only a few dozen”!!) But, again without benefit of a calculator, I think that he has more wonderful romantic ballads to his credit than any other performer of our era. The title of my essay, “A Mission of Love,” comes from one of his lesser-known upbeat, romantic songs.

Please.... just sit back, watch the lyrics go by; reminisce; hum, or sing along, if you’d like. (Mousever to pause the scroll.) We are so very, very fortunate!

When you’re done, listen to short clips from some of these songs:     text

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Boomer-Era Love Songs

Love, look at the two of us
Strangers in many ways
Let’s take a lifetime to say,
“I knew you well”
For only time
will tell us so

You don’t know how many times I’ve wished
     that I had told you
You don’t know how many times I’ve wished
     that I could hold you
You don’t know how many times I’ve wished
     that I could mold you
Into someone who could cherish me as much
     as I cherish you
And I do
     cherish you

I said I love you
And that’s forever
And this I promise
from the heart
I could not love you
Any better
I love you
Just the way you are

I love how your eyes close
Whenever you kiss me
And when I’m away from you
I love how you miss me
I love the way you always treat me
      tenderly
But, darling, most of all
I love how you love me

The greatest thing
You’ll ever learn
Is just to love
And be loved in return

Goodnight, my love
Pleasant dreams and sleep tight, my love
May tomorrow be sunny and bright
And bring you closer to me

On my own,
Would I wander through this wonderland alone
Never knowing my right foot from my left,
My hat from my glove,
I’m too misty, and too much in love

Sugarpie honeybunch
You know that I love you
I can’t help myself
I love you and nobody else

Love, can make the summer fly,
Or a night seem like a lifetime
Yes love, love changes everything,
Now I tremble, at your name
Nothing in the world will ever be the same

You are my special angel
Sent from up above
The Lord smiled down on me
And sent an angel to love

Kiss me and smile for me;
Tell me that you’ll wait for me;
Hold me like you’ll never let me go

Perhaps love is like the ocean
Full of conflict, full of change
Like a fire when it’s cold outside
Or thunder when it rains
If I should live forever
And all my dreams come true
My memories of love will be of you

And I love you so
The people ask me how
How I’ve lived till now
I tell them I don’t know

I don’t know what it is that makes me love you so
I only know I never wanna let you go
’Cause you started something, Can’t you see?
That ever since we met you’ve had a hold on me.
It happens to be true,
I only want to be with you

When you hold my hand,
I understand the magic that you do
You’re my dream come true,
My one, and only you

I hope life treats you kind
And I hope you have all you’ve dreamed of
And I wish to you, joy and happiness
But above all this, I wish you love

If you wonder why I’m giving you these treasures,
Because you’re like no one else I ever knew,
I believe that as we walk through time,
The best is yet to come,
’Cause I believe I’m gonna love you
’Cause I believe I’m gonna love you

My love is warmer than the warmest sunshine
Softer than a sigh
My love is deeper than the deepest ocean
Wider than the sky
My love is brighter than the brightest star
That shines every night above
And there is nothing in this world
That can ever change my love

I don’t care what they say,
I won’t stay
in a world without love

Thinking it over, I’ve been sad
Thinking it over, I’d be more than glad
To change my ways for the asking
Ask and I will play
All the love that I hold inside

I want to stop and thank you baby
I just want to stop and thank you baby
How sweet it is to be loved by you

Then I saw her face
Now I’m a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind
I’m in love
I’m a believer
I couldn’t leave her if I tried

My prayer
And the answer you give
May they still be the same
For as long as we live
That you’ll always be there
at the end of.... my... prayer

Every night I hope and pray
A dream lover will come my way
A girl to hold in my arms
And know the magic of her charms

For once I can say
“This is mine, you can’t take it;
Long as I know I’ve got love I can make it”
For once in my life
I’ve got someone who needs me

In the misty moonlight
By the flickering firelight
Any place is all right
Long as I’m with you

I can’t stop loving you
I’ve made up my mind
To live in memory
Of the lonesome times

One: the way you hold my hand
Two: your laughing eyes
Three: the way you understand
Four: your secret sighs
They’re all part of sixteen reasons
Why I... why I love you

Lady, you’ve been dreaming,
I’m as close as I can be
And I swear to you
Our time has just begun

Now, I can take the time
I can see my life
As it comes up shining now
Reaching out to touch you
I can feel so much
Since I found you
Looking through... the eyes... of love

Love me tender,
love me sweet,
Never let me go;
You have made my life complete,
And I love you so

Oh, I love you more today than yesterday
But not as much as tomorrow

I’ll always remember the song they were playin’
The first time we danced and I knew
As we swayed to the music and held to each other
I fell in love with you

Have I told you lately that I love you?
Have I told you there’s no one else above you?
Fill my heart with gladness, take away all my sadness,
Ease my troubles, that’s what you do
Take away all my sadness, fill my life with gladness,
Ease my troubles, that’s what you do

Hello, my friend, hello
Just called to let you know
I think about you every night
When I’m here alone
And you’re there at home
Hello

Oh Diana, can’t you see
I love you with all my heart
And I hope we will never part
Oh, please, stay with me, Diana

’Cause there’s no gettin’ over that rainbow
When my smallest of dreams won’t come true
I can take all the madness the world has to give
But I won’t last a day without you

Hold me, hold me
Never let me go until you’ve told me, told me
What I want to know and then just hold me, hold me
Make me tell you I’m in love with you

I give her all my love
That’s all I do
And if you saw my love
You’d love her too
I love her

And after all that we’ve been through
It all comes down to me and you
I guess it’s meant to be
Forever you and me
After all

It’s right... that I should care about you
And try to make you happy when you’re blue
It’s right, it’s right... to feel the way I do
Because, because I love you

Always and forever
Each moment with you, is just like a dream to me
That somehow came true

April love
Is for the very young
Every star’s a wishing star
That shines for you

I love, I love, I love my calender girl
Yeah, sweet calender girl
I love, I love, I love my calender girl
Each and every day of the year

Darlin’ you can count on me
Till the sun dries up the sea
Until then I’ll always be..... devoted, to you

Colour my world with hope
Of loving you

Everybody loves somebody sometime
And though my dreams were overdue
Your love made it all worth waiting
For someone like you

Because the greatest love of all
Is happening to me
I found the greatest love of all
Inside of me

More than the greatest love the world has known
This is the love I give to you alone

Put your head on my shoulder
Hold me in your arms, baby
Squeeze me oh so tight
Show me that you love me too

Lovely ... never, ever change.
Keep that breathless charm
Won’t you please arrange it ?
’Cause I love you ... Just the way you look tonight

As we stroll along... together
Holding hands, walking all alone
So in love are we two
That we don’t know what to do
So in love... so in love

At the end of a river, the water stops its flow
At the end of a highway, there’s no place you can go
But just tell me you love and you are only mine
And our love... will go on... till the e-end... of time
Till the end... of time

You’re the story of my life,
And every word is true
Each chapter sings your name
Each page begins with you
It’s the story of our times
And never letting go
If I die today,
I wanted you to know

’Tho’ we gotta say goodbye, for the summer
Darling I promise you this
I’ll send you all my love
every day in a letter
Sealed with a kiss

And love may grow,
for all we know

The BBHQ Feature Album is "Old Friends Live on Stage (Deluxe Edition) (2 CD/1 DVD)," by Simon & Garfunkel. If you were fortunate enough to see them in concert in 2003, I do not have to sell you. The concert was terrific! This album collection includes 55 songs, plus their new recording, "Citizen of the Planet," and one of the songs sung by the Everly Brothers during the concert. The DVD was recorded during their concert in Madison Square Garden in 2003. For any S&G fan, this is a must have! But then, you knew that already, didn't you? Old Friends Live on Stage (Deluxe Edition) (2 CD/1 DVD)

The BBHQ Feature Book is “Bobby Rydell – Teen Idol on the Rocks.” This is a “behind the scenes” story of one of the boomers’ first rock n’ roll stars. Told in the first person, Bobby chronicles his short ride to the pinnacle of fame and fortune, his glide through the 70s and 80s, and how he nearly lost it all. Relax; it has a happy ending. Bobby was (and is) a “normal” Philly guy... with an absolute love of music and an amazing gift. For any fan of early rock n’ roll, it’s a wonderful story. And yes, Bobby Rydell is still on tour, playing to boomer fans all over the world. Click here for a closer look at the book.
