BBHQ Boomer Essays:

Contraception Misdirection

Our Boomer-In-Charge at BBHQ, Hershel Chicowitz, writes about boomer memories and current events... from a boomer’s perspective. He is sometimes funny, sometimes provocative, some-
times a little of each. We hope you get a kick out of our Boomer Essays.

We have an annual trillion dollar deficit that is costing us hundreds of billions of dollars every year... just to cover the interest on the accumulated debt. Our economic recovery, as anemic as it is, is the worst in the nation’s history. The president’s treasury secretary has admitted that this administration has no answer to our horrible financial crisis. The Middle East is a mess. Around the world, we have alienated our friends and placated our adversaries to no benefit. Our public school system is a failure; our roads, water and sewer systems are poorly maintained; we are inundated with illegal immigrants... and the president and the mainstream press has decided that contraception should be a campaign issue.

One of the main tools in a magician's toolbag is that of misdirection. He leads you to focus on his right hand while he stuffs a rabbit in his hat with his left hand. Moments later, the rabbit pops out of the hat. Pufffff; it's magic!!

Candidate Mitt Romney is on the stump having to affirm that he would not even think about trying to outlaw contraception. Rick Santorum jumped in, and put his foot in his mouth. And ABC News got a Santorum benefactor to make a goofy statement about contraception when he was a kid. (A Bayer aspirin... held tightly between the legs. Ha, ha, ha.)

If you had been in a Rip Van Winkle state since the mid 70s, you'd think that you had not missed a beat.

Nobody in the public eye had brought up the subject of contraception since... since we were in college. It was a settled issue. But when you do an Internet search, you'll find over 31 million entries... in the past month! Why, all of the sudden, is contraception a presidential campaign issue? Who started this, and why? Something's fishy here, and it's not 3 day-old tuna.

It started late last month when, during a debate, moderator (and former Clinton lackey) George Stephanopoulos asked candidate Romney if he believed that a state has the right to outlaw contraception. Romney was stunned. The question came from way out in left field. Romney answered it adequately (George, no state is even thinking about outlawing it), but the question achieved the desired result. It made it into the mainstream press. A seed was planted.

Within a couple days, left wing pundits and politicians were declaring that Republicans want to eliminate a woman's (and presumably, a man's) right to use contraceptives. Those "demons," as Democratic whack-job Maxine Waters called them. Republicans not only want to pollute the air and dirty the water, and throw grandma out on the street, but they want to take away a woman's most basic right -- birth control. Off with their heads!

Never mind that there is not a shred of evidence to support this absurd contention... not one shred! Who's gonna' question the mainstream media?

The BBHQ Feature Album is "Old Friends Live on Stage (Deluxe Edition) (2 CD/1 DVD)," by Simon & Garfunkel. If you were fortunate enough to see them in concert in 2003, I do not have to sell you. The concert was terrific! This album collection includes 55 songs, plus their new recording, "Citizen of the Planet," and one of the songs sung by the Everly Brothers during the concert. The DVD was recorded during their concert in Madison Square Garden in 2003. For any S&G fan, this is a must have! But then, you knew that already, didn't you? Old Friends Live on Stage (Deluxe Edition) (2 CD/1 DVD)

The BBHQ Feature Book is “Bobby Rydell – Teen Idol on the Rocks.” This is a “behind the scenes” story of one of the boomers’ first rock n’ roll stars. Told in the first person, Bobby chronicles his short ride to the pinnacle of fame and fortune, his glide through the 70s and 80s, and how he nearly lost it all. Relax; it has a happy ending. Bobby was (and is) a “normal” Philly guy... with an absolute love of music and an amazing gift. For any fan of early rock n’ roll, it’s a wonderful story. And yes, Bobby Rydell is still on tour, playing to boomer fans all over the world. Click here for a closer look at the book.
